Frequently Asked Questions - about the Popit Wrap

  1. Will the Popit Wrap strain my back?

One of the main benefits of the Popit Wrap is that it is designed to reduce strain on your back.  Because the fabric is spread evenly over your shoulders and back the possibilty of strain is reduced. If you have severe back trouble we would recommend you seek advise form your health care proffesional. For the most part even those with back trouble will notice how light your baby feels when worn in the Popit Wrap.

  2. Is the Popit Wrap gentle on my baby?

The Popit Wrap is perfect for your baby’s developing spine as it places no pressure on their back. A newborn baby is able to curl up in the wrap as they would in the womb and the wrap will not restrict or hurt your baby. The fabric molds to both you and baby.

  3. What fabric is the Popit Wrap made from?

The fabric is 100% cotton single jersey knit and is milled in New Zealand. The Popit wrap has a one way stretch which means that baby will be comfortable but can’t slip or sag away from you. Some wraps have a two way stretch meaning that as baby gets heavier the wrap can sag. The fabric is also extremely light weight meaning it is not bulky and it breathes.

  4. Where is the Popit Wrap made?

The Popit Wrap is both designed and made in New Zealand. The Popit Wrap is manufactured by a company in Palmerston North who have proven experience with knit fabrics. Much research and testing was done to find a factory that would make the wrap to Popit’s high quality standards.

  5. Is the Popit Wrap complicated to put on and how long does it take to tie?

No the Popit Wrap is not complicated. It can take a few times to perfect the tying but once you have mastered it you will love the Popit Wrap. Tying time is about 2 minutes and 1-2minutes to place baby in, so it is very quick.

  6. My baby fusses when put in the Popit Wrap - do some babies not like being worn?

Some baby's will fuss when first put in the Popit Wrap simply because they are not used to it. If you are breastfeeding it is likely they can smell your milk and may think its feed time. It can also depend on when you put your baby in the Popit Wrap as to what reaction you get. When you first start to use the Popit Wrap with you baby it is a good idea to make sure he/she is will fed, has a clean nappy and is not over tired. It may also be worth trying a few different positions with you baby to find the one they are most comfortable with. That is the wonderful versatility of the Popit Wrap - it can be worn in so many different ways so you can find a method that suits you and your baby.  It is not my experience that some babies don’t like being worn; it is often just that it can take some getting used to for both you and your baby, and the benefits of persevering a huge.

  7. Is the Popit Wrap easy to wash and dry?

Yes the Popit Wrap is very easy to wash and can be tumble dried. The Popit Wrap can be placed in with you normal washing and either dried on the line or in the drier on a medium or low heat. Drying on the line takes about four hours on a good sunny day.

PLEASE NOTE: Older versions of the wrap had a care label that said it was not ok to tumble dry, this has since been changed and all wraps, no matter when they were purchased, are safe to tumble dry.

  8. The care label is showing on the wrap when I wear it – can I remove it?

Yes – some people don’t like the care label being seen so please feel free to remove it by unpicking the stitching at the top of the label. The care label is now black and is on the black side towards the end but may be seen where the Popit Wrap is tied.

  9. Will the Popit Wrap get longer over time – is there a way to get it back to shape?

Yes the wrap will stretch a bit with wear (however this happens slowly so your baby will not sag away from you) but washing the Popit Wrap will return it to its original size and shape.

  10. Will wearing the Popit Wrap be hot in summer?

The Popit Wrap is 100% cotton so is designed to breath. It is also extremely light weight so even though it consists of two layers the combined weight of the two layers of fabric is not much more than an average t-shirt. You will feel the warmth of baby on you but because the fabric breathes you will feel no hotter than simply holding your baby. We recommend that you dress as light as possible in summer and have baby in lightweight clothing - perhaps a layer less than normal.

  11. What size is the Popit Wrap and will it fit my curves?

The Popit Wrap is one size and is designed to be one size fits all. It is 5 meters in length and 45cm wide. Because you tie the wrap to you it will fit your size perfectly so no matter what shape you are you will get a perfect fit – this also means that you can put it on anyone else (partner, grandparent, friend) and you know it will fit. Many mums comment that they love how the wrap covers their baby bulge so not only is it a practical way to carry your baby with you it also gives mums a lot of confidence post birth to go out with baby.

If you think the Popit Wrap will not fit your size we are happy to look at custom making for you. Please contact us to discuss this further.

  12. How long can I use the Popit Wrap for?

The answer to that question is really as you long as like. The weight of the Popit Wrap is evenly distributed over your shoulders which helps to reduce strain on your back, so as long as you are comfortable with the weight of your baby/toddler the Popit Wrap will support that weight. We have a recommended weight of 15kg or 2 years but this is purely a recommendation – if both you and your baby/toddler are comfortable then keep wearing them.

  13. I’m not sure that I would be comfortable wrapping the Popit Wrap in public – what is your advice?

The Popit Wrap can be wrapped on before you leave home and can be left on even when baby is out of it. This way when you get to your destination you can pick baby up and place them straight in which only takes a minute or two (if that).

  14. Is the Popit Wrap suitable for Men?

Yes absolutely – in fact many men find it a fantastic way to bond with their baby and it’s often an experience they may otherwise miss out on. Many men prefer to wear carriers that are black so because the wrap has black on one side the men will be kept happy. Some men prefer to leave the shoulder pieces up on their shoulder and not draping over their arm.

  15. Why should I buy the Popit Wrap compared to other carriers on the market?

The Popit Wrap has been designed to allow many different carrying options with just the one purchase. Because each baby has their own distinct personality it is often clear from early on that they have a specific way they like to be held. The Popit Wrap allows you to hold your baby in over six different holds which means you can find that hold that suits your baby and continue to use the wrap as baby gets older.

There are no clasps, buckles or zips so not only is it extremely comfortable to wear it is also one of the easiest baby carriers to use. A lot of people struggle with placing baby in commercial carriers because you have to clip then on whilst holding baby. With most holds in the Popit Wrap you tie the wrap before putting baby in making it extremely easy to do yourself. And because the Popit Wrap comes with an instructional DVD you will be able to see easily how to use the wrap (all video can be viewed on our website).

But of the course the most unique feature about the Popit wrap is the two tones, colour on one side, black on the other. This gives you more variety to match the wrap with your outfit and also assists in making sure the wrap has not twisted when tying. The Popit wrap now comes in five fabulous colours.

And lets not forget that the Popit Wrap is made in New Zealand so you will be supporting New Zealand industry.
