Kangaroo Hold- Instructional video for the Popit Wrap
The Kangaroo hold is perfect for premature or newborn babies as it allows skin to skin
contact. It is also great for getting older babies to sleep as once the are asleep they
can be taken out of the wrap and placed into bed without waking.
This method assists in kangaroo care which follows the concept of the baby
kangaroo being held in the mothers pouch. Having baby close to you, especially
skin to skin, allows baby’s temperature to regulate. This is especially
important for premature babies and newborn babies who may not be able to
regulate their own body temperature. Being close to a parent allows the baby to
feel your heartbeat and encourages bonding with your baby. This method also
provides ready access to breastfeeding.
The baby ideally should be wearing a nappy only and be facing the parent chest
to chest. Place baby's head at your chest level so that baby can hear your
heartbeat. Kangaroo care can begin as soon as baby is born but starting anytime
has huge benefits.
